The Jerusalem Post reports that 507 checks from around the world, signed but not made out to anyone, were found in an envelope at Jerusalem's Western Wall on Wednesday. The checks are worth about a half a billion dollars! Hoax or not, this got my attention.

It is a well-known tradition for people visiting the Western Wall to pray and leave notes in the cracks, but this has to be a first. Imagine the shock, not to mention moral dilemma, of finding an envelope worth such a fortune. Granted, it's not a $9 billion check like the one I found (on the Internet), but a small fortune nonetheless. The man who found them was praying for financial security. Like a Good Neighbor . . . Poof!

Upon further investigation, many of the checks were found to be Nigerian. Suspicions are that they originated from a now remorseful agent of, or thee "Nigerian Prince" himself.

The authorities, mostly baffled, might consider consulting Frank Abagnale Jr. He is widely considered the world's foremost authority on check fraud, rising to fame in the 1960's and 1970's after successfully cashing over $2.5 million worth of fraudulent checks and impersonating many types of businessmen. That's him as an airline pilot to the left. Let's also not forget that Leonardo DiCaprio played him in Catch Me If You Can.
