NRF - Holiday Spending Starts with Halloween Costumes

Posted by Brandon Weaver | Wed, Oct 24, 2012 @ 11:00 AM

scuba diver dogPet costumes are an age-old tradition for holidays. Even more so for Halloween, so it may come as no surprise that Halloween is big business for retailers. The National Retail Federation predicts a 4.1 peprison-inmate-dogrcent increase to $586 billion in retail sales during the holidays. They also estimate we'll each spend an average of $80 on decorations, candy and costumes, including pet costumes. Remove decorations, food, greeting cards and flowers, there is still about $470 billion left for everything you sell!

In the spirit of the holiday, we found these funny costumes for our furry friends, and wonder will they be going trick or treating?

darth-vader-dogScuba Diver: Funny? Yes. Prepared for deep sea diving? Yes. Is the suit doggy-paddle friendly? Too tough to tell. Here's my question: how do you even get this costume on the dog without a fight?

Prison Inmate: We're betting he either stole food from the dinner table or chewed up the newly purchased couch cushions. Dogs might be a man's best friend, but even they have a naughty side and can be fitted for a prison jump superman dogsuit. In fact, this guy looks a little too happy to be in his new digs.

Darth Vader: What's a Halloween article without Darth Vader? Puggs are not the most intimidating of animals so he tried to harness his inner mean side with these decked-out threads, to no avail. Even dogs want to join waldo dogthe dark side, similar to the child in this VW commercial. It's a given, enough said.

Superman: Who knew that dogs loved superheros too? There's no better hero than the man of steel himself, right? No kryptonite here, probably just a bone or two and you can get this dog to surrender.

Waldo: Even though the premise of Waldo is to find him in a crowded scene, there's no escaping this little guy. How can you not feel sorry for this pup? Look at those glasses and that face!frog cat

Frog: Maybe this feline really wanted to be born a frog? Or at least reincarnated as one? Either way it will have to learn a whole queen elizabeth catnew language. Ribbit?

Queen Elizabeth: They might be potty trained to use the litter box, but who says cats can't be royalty too? Queen Elizabeth anyone?

They might not win best-in-show for beauty and elegance, but we're betting that's not what pet owners are going for. Which costume is your favorite? What is the funniest, craziest, or most absurd costume you've dressed your pet as?
