CrossCheckPetaluma, Calif. (July 15, 2019) — The volunteer effort by staff members of CrossCheck and affiliate, Optio Solutions, at the Redwood Empire Food Bank has reached 14 consecutive months. Ten employees participated in the food bank’s weekday Warehouse Support program on June 27. Food bank representative Cassidy Jourdan said the staff members helped package 4,722 pounds of fresh apples and oranges, representing 3,935 meals for seniors in need.

During the 14-month period of May 2018 through June 2019, company volunteers are responsible for packing 2,274 grocery boxes, 7,161 pounds of apples, 6,600 pounds of carrots, 7,161 pounds of oranges, and 2,400 pounds of plums. Their efforts represent over 700 man-hours and approximately 75,527 meals for people in need. The team is composed of 13 volunteers per month on average.

CrossCheck Senior Vice President Charles Dortch III launched the effort in May 2018 and is on site to help pack IMG_7743_edit-1food items.

“I initiated volunteer nights at the food bank because I wanted to enhance the fabric of our company culture by establishing a volunteer presence within the county,” said Dortch.

He is joined by other senior vice presidents as well as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Office Chris Schumacher.

“The monthly volunteer night at the food bank is fun for our team of CrossCheck and Optio employees,” said Schumacher. “Our staff has a chance to interact with members of other departments while giving back to the local community.”

The food bank is currently assisting Sonoma County residents impacted by the flood waters of the Russian River in addition to the usual recipients of food boxes.

The Redwood Empire Food Bank (REFB) is the largest hunger-relief organization serving north coastal California from Sonoma County to the Oregon border. Since 1987, the REFB has provided food and nourishment to those facing hunger, currently serving 82,000 children, families and seniors in Sonoma County while striving to end hunger in the community.

Evening Warehouse Support shifts are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 5 – 7 pm, but a variety of other volunteer opportunities are offered throughout the week (see the REFB Volunteer page for days and times.)
