PETALUMA, Calif. – CrossCheck, Inc., a thirty-two year old provider of payment and check guarantee services with a long history of philanthropy, contributed an incredible $7,936 to the American Cancer Society this year.
All contributions came from employees participating at company locations in Petaluma, California, Phoenix, Arizona and Dallas, Texas.
By making a contribution, employees could “dress down”, replacing business casual with jeans. The company also held a bake sale, where the culinarily gifted donated goodies and everyone else happily overpaid for them.
Employees made additional contributions by tossing spare change into a collection bucket, and when the total collected there exceeded a certain amount, dress down was extended. This time, shorts and flip-flops were allowed, and Petaluma employees gratefully noted that it happened to coincide with the hottest weather of the summer in Northern California.
The company’s efforts paid off. Of the forty-seven companies participating in this year’s fund raiser, CrossCheck came in third. These efforts matter because cancer is still the second most common cause of death in the country, claiming over 1,600 people a day. Americans spend nearly $90 billion a year for treatment alone.
However, thanks to fundraisers like CrossCheck’s and the dogged efforts of the American Cancer Society, in 2012 the United States celebrated a 20% decline in cancer death rates over the course of the previous twenty years. Two of the Society’s researchers won the Nobel Prize in 2011.
