PETALUMA, Calif. – Merchants confronting an expanding array of payment options and a radically altered set of consumer preferences need to know which payment types drive profit, and so today CrossCheck Inc., a thirty-year leader in the payments processing industry, has published a white paper analyzing these changes from a business owner’s point of view.

Payment methods have expanded in recent years to include Automated Clearing House transactions, debit cards, prepaid cards, and online bill payment – complex changes any business owner needs to evaluate. Add to that fundamental shifts in Americans’ payment preferences due to lessons learned over the most severe recession since the Great Depression, and there’s no wonder that both the Federal Reserve and the financial services industry have been publishing study after study trying to ascertain what’s going on and where things are heading.

CrossCheck’s paper attempts to aggregate their most salient points into an actionable plan for merchants trying to determine how to best allocate their payment processing budget. With a particular emphasis on how the recession changed the business-oriented usage of paper checks and drove the value of each check significantly higher, the paper also explains why the overall use of checks has declined significantly over the last decade.

The paper considers the bi-annual 2013 Federal Reserve Payments Study along with several other Federal Reserve studies and industry reports to help entrepreneurs determine:

  1. How dramatic changes in the use of debit cards and checks may impact their business
  2. If they should modify their approach to closing high-value sales due to fundamental, recession-induced shifts in the use of credit cards
  3. Which payment types may be most important for their particular enterprise
  4. How to circumvent the most common type of payment fraud
