The researchers said early diagnosis at dental offices and treatment of both periodontitis and diabetes could benefit patients by preventing further complications. “Periodontitis as a possible early sign of diabetes mellitus” was authored by Dr. Wijnand Teeuw, the director of the center’s periodontology clinic. Research Shows Dentists Prescribing More Antibiotics

on Fri, Jun 10, 2016 @ 07:00 PM By | Joe Gargiulo | 0 Comments | Dentists
A recent study of data compiled between 1996 and 2013 reveals a 62% increase in the prescribing of antibiotics by dentists despite declines in their prescribing by physicians and overall use. The work was conducted by a Canadian team including researchers from the University of British Columbia and the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control. “Antibiotic Prescribing by Dentists Has Increased” was published in the May 2016 issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association. Dentists cited several critical reasons for prescribing antibiotics: treatment of periapical abscess and irreversible pulpitis; widespread use of dental implants and bone grafting; and perioperative prophylaxis for patients with prosthetic joints or valvular heart disease. Nevertheless, the study serves as a barometer for an industry committed to helping patients as it searches for new ways to increase sales.
