Do you or a loved one qualify for Medicaid long-term care programs? State by state, Medicaid program eligibility and coverage requirements vary. In the interactive “Medicaid Long Term Care Guide,” Arizona organization Senior Planning dissects the medical resources of all 50 states.

The goal of Medicaid long-term care programs is to support blind, disabled and aged individuals. With so many patient choices, the CrossCheck editorial team decided to examine the requirements and resources available to Californians.

California Medical Resource

MedicalAn applicant’s eligibility is determined by the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) test. The ADLs test includes “mobility, bathing, feeding, using the restroom unaided, dressing, and regulating/taking medication.” If he or she cannot perform three out of the six tasks independently, applicants qualify for a swing bed and could receive Medi-Cal long-term care benefits.

See California Partnership for Long Term Care for eligibility and California Medicaid Long Term Care Eligibility page for a list of exempt assets.

According to Senior Planning, "Countable assets include, but are not limited to: Checking or savings accounts, CDs, investment accounts like mutual funds, stocks and bonds; life insurance policies with a value more than $1500, cars (anything over one car is counted); second homes and non-business properties; accounts held in revocable trusts; promissory notes, etc."

Qualified individuals can expect applications to take 45 – 90 days. Services covered by California’s program includes diapers and other medical equipment, doctor’s visits, dental care and daily rates at nursing homes. This program does not cover assisted living facilities, board and care facilities and senior residence rates.

Learn more and find your own state’s qualifications by referring to the Medicaid Long Term Care Guide. Senior Planning advises individuals applying for Medicaid long term care programs to speak with local experts prior to taking action.
