It’s large, it’s green and it's coming to Silicon Valley near the Apple computer headquarters in Cupertino, California. As part of the redevelopment of the 40-year-old Vallco Shopping Mall, landscape architects have designed a 30-acre green roof that will be largest in the World upon approval and completion. The entire project is estimated at $3 billion. When groundbreaking begins, the project will require enormous resources that will increase building supply sales for local dealers.

The green dream team is composed of architect Rafael Viñoly from Uruguay and Laurie Olin of Philadelphia’s OLIN Landscape Architect, both famous in their own right.

Viñoly created London’s Walkie Talkie building and the pencil-thin 432 Park Avenue skyscraper in Manhattan while Olin’s porfolio includes Bryant Park in NYC, the grounds surrounding the Washington Monument, the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles, and the 16th Street Mall in Denver.

The Hills at Vallco will be covered by a sprawling community park and nature preserve that features vineyards, orchards, playgrounds, amphitheater and nearly four miles of trails. It will also include a mix of retail, dining, entertainment, recreation, offices, housing, open space and public amenities. The lush foliage is expected to attract local wildlife.

The developer, Sand Hill Property Co., submitted plans to the city of Cupertino in September 2015 as part of an approval process that may take over one year. “The city must approve a specific plan for the project, a development agreement, a conditional use permit, zoning conformance and various permits, maps and agreements,” states Sand Hill.

With current tenant occupancy in Vallco Mall hovering around 50%, Cupertino has a vested interest in making the project a reality. Visit cupertino.org/thehillsatvallco for information about the project review process including renderings, site plans and diagrams.

Whether you are near Silicon Valley or not, it always pays to be ready for the next wave of potential new customers, especially in the area of accepting payments.
