The Certified Flooring Installers, a division of the World Floor Covering Association, present the 25th Annual CFI Flooring Convention & Expo in Orlando, Fla. August 15 – 17. The trade event offers the latest in “new products, tools, techniques and training” for flooring professionals as well as a selection of networking opportunities and the Associate Showcase. Business coach and consultant Josh McGinnis will deliver the keynote address "Why Most Business Plans Are Worthless" at 9:30 am on August 16.
Social events include a Welcome Reception on August 15; the Cash Bar, Dinner and CFI Fun Night on August 16; and the Closing Dinner and Awards Night on August 17.
The current U.S. market is ripe for new construction, renovations and DIY projects that lean heavily on a plethora of new flooring products composed of innovative materials. Flooring installers are ready to seize this opportunity that is enhanced by the Certified Flooring Installers association. The convention provides the needed know-how for successful installations in terms of materials, techniques, compliance, management and estimations. Flooring installers will be impressed by the below seminar topics providing value to nearly every level of industry experience.
“Steps to Successful Installation” — Presenter Don Styka of Tarkett offers a discussion of “proper product selection, site conditions, pre-installation moisture testing, product acclimation, subfloor prep, adhesive selection, installation, floor protection, and initial maintenance.”
“Piecework” — This aptly-named session by Jeffrey King covers the “width, length and depth” of receiving compensation via the common practice of piece rate. The online description states that this method “is perfectly legal if properly executed and documented,” but recommends that retailers follow minimum wage and overtime laws while paying a piece-rate. As expressed in the session summary, “the requirements of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and state wage and hour laws requiring minimum wage and overtime pay still apply.”
"Commercial Made Easy” by Rod Von Busch & Roland Thompson offers “tips and best practices for establishing a good working environment on large commercial job sites.” This session focuses on how to defend an installer's portion of the contractor schedule as well as building relationships with decision-makers.
"Industry Requirements: Fair or Unrealistic?" discusses the always controversial installer requirements. Presenter Paul Pleshek, NAFCT covers “the good, the bad and the ugly” of requirements — reasonable or not — and what can be done “to change them.”
Presented by Scott Humphrey, WFCA, "Practical Leadership Your Key to Success" offers advice on how flooring installers can energize their dormant leadership skills and positively influence the performance of their entire team. Humphrey “will share how he has used his leadership influence to positively impact the WFCA and the flooring industry” as well as other factors such as leadership traits that impact installers “both personally and professionally.” He will also “share real life scenarios of those who have taken on the challenge of leadership and succeeded,” and show attendees how to apply principles and success to individual situations.
Staying true to the innovation theme, "Add New Profit Centers To Your Business" presenters Larry Cooper (The Experience Convention & Trade Show) and Barry Costa (Costa Group Education) will discuss flooring installer diversification via add-on services including carpet cleaning; hard surface floor maintenance and restoration; and carpet repair and installation related repairs.
In particular, Costa will detail “fractured seam repair in the middle of a long, stretch-in installation hot-melt seam, [one of the] unique ‘tricks of the trade’ when it comes to permanent sections (bonded-insert) repairs.”
Not to be outdone by the seminars, the workshops offered at the CFI Flooring Convention & Expo are all hands on presentations while most are conducted by flooring product vendors.
"The Evolution of Resilient Wall Base" by Don Styka and Dick Schmidt of Tarkett will look behind the curtain of resilient wall base. Attendees are invited to “learn about the origin, construction, and proper installation of the various types of resilient wall base. This session will review adhesive options, recommended tools, and demonstrate proper installation techniques that provide successful results.”
"Pattern Matching/Identification Workshop" by Dwyane Pruitt provides in-depth learning about “the proper identification and measuring of patterned goods as well as corrective procedures for pattern deviation.”
In "Tools of the Industry," Corey Dickerson of Tools 4 Flooring discusses a selection of “the new and innovative tools on the market from prep, to installations, to finishing by manufacturers such as Wolff, Bullet, D-Cut, FastneMasters and DeWalt.
Led by Andrew Smith, Mohawk's Technical Team captures an informational and technical presentation of their newly re-engineered broadloom carpet in "AIR.O- Innovation in Soft Floor Covering."
The final workshop, “Schönox Solutions for Critical Substrates” by David Stowell of HPS Schönox, will demonstrate “SL, the original moisture resistant feather edge” as well as new 2018 products including Schönox Synthetic Hybrids in AP Rapid, AP Rapid Plus, Schönox XM, Schönox RF and Schönox PL.
