What CrossCheck Is Not - Not Hockey Hits, Mtn. Bikes, nor Insecticide

Posted by Brandon Weaver | Thu, Nov 20, 2014 @ 10:49 AM

Remember back in grade school when you first learned synonyms are “words or phrases that have the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or phrase?” A less familiar term you may not remember are homonyms, “a word that is spelled the same as another word but that does not have the same meaning.” Similarly, homophones are “words pronounced the same as another word, but which has a different meaning or spelling.”

If you do a quick Internet search for “CrossCheck,” “cross check,” or “cross-check” you will find a large variety of search results. As it turns out, cross check is both a homonym and homophone, so we wanted to make clear all the things that CrossCheck is not:

CrossCheck Does Not Arm the Door

CrossCheck AirlineIn the aviation industry “cross-checking” is a safety measure performed by flight crews. Before departure flight attendants cross check that doors are armed, slides will deploy if needed, and even verify that their colleagues have armed their doors as well. Or think about any of the detail-oriented, step-by-step process astronauts perform while on duty. Albeit very important to their respective jobs, flight attendants and astronauts cross checking processes are not what we’re referring to.

CrossCheck Will Not Knock You off Your Skates

Sports enthusiasts will refer to cross-check as being a violent maneuver in hockey or lacrosse where one player “thrusts one’s stick in both hands across an opponent’s face or body.” It can be an effective and exciting defensive play, but most definitely dangerous, like those in the video below. But for business owners, this variation of cross-check is not relevant – even if you’re a hockey or lacrosse fan.

CrossCheck Will Not Do Your Homework

Anyone who has ever written a paper for school or part of their job knows the importance of writing original work and not using another publisher’s content without proper citation. Penalties for plagiarism can cause the offender to lose credit in the class, be expelled, lose his or her job, be exposed to a civil suit from the original author, and the professional embarrassment that can occur as a result of plagiarism.

To help authors protect their work, iThenticate’s CrossCheck™ initiative was “established to help publishers prevent professional plagiarism and other forms of scholarly misconduct” and it provides a way for publishers to cross check their content with the “largest database of scientific, technical and medical content in the world.”

To publishers, iThenticate may be their best friend, but that’s not the kind of cross checking relevant to business owners dealing with check payments.

CrossCheck Does Not Provide a Lively Ride

CrossCheck SurlyIn the bike world, riders may know the Surly brand that designs and produces frames and parts. As told by Surly themselves, “the Cross-Check was the third frame they ever offered … it does a good job of getting you across the country as it does getting you across town …[and is] designed to supply a comfortable but lively ride.”

As any bike aficionado will tell you, there is no one bike that fits all because all bikes are built for specific purposes and for different sized people – just like the word “cross-check” and its many meanings.

CrossCheck Does Not Kill Bugs

CrossCheck® insecticide is used mostly in landscaped and ornamental areas to control pests. Residential and commercial buildings, parks, golf courses, athletic fields and more use it to help eliminate ants, house flies, fleas and mole crickets. We’re not sure, but we believe this may be more efficient than chasing bugs with a hammer.

CrossCheck Helps You Sell Tickets, Services and Merchandise

Maybe the most top-of-mind definition for the term cross check is to determine the accuracy of a process, especially one involving money. Anyone who has ever had a checking account knows how important it is to reconcile (“cross check”) your bank transactions with the bank records.
