Armed Forces Day

Posted by Andrew Donahey | Sat, May 17, 2014 @ 06:00 AM

Military Veteran Business OwnersArmed Forces Day is an excellent time to thank our active and retired military and reserve personnel for their patriotic service to our country.

When Did We First Observe Armed Forces Day?

President Harry S. Truman established this holiday and Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced its creation on August 31, 1949. It replaced separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days and was born of the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. The first Armed Forces Day was observed on May 20, 1950.

How Many People are Honored?

As of December 31, 2013 a whopping 7% of the U.S. population was on active duty in the U.S. armed forces, with an additional 850,000 people in the seven reserve components. That’s approximately 1.4 million people that we’re honoring today! And let’s not forget our more than 23 million veterans either. Of course, if you’re honoring the individual, you have to honor his or her family too, making the numbers even more staggering.

Where are Our Troops?

The Department of Defense owns some 30 million acres of land across the world at more than 6,000 locations where there are more than 600,000 buildings and structures. Our men and women of the military, and often their families, span the globe in their service to our country.

How Can I Honor Our Military Personnel?

Say thank you to someone you know in the military. Share this article with someone you think would appreciate it, or leave a comment to share with others. Maybe consider doing business with a military veteran. It shouldn’t be hard because according to the most current U.S. Census Bureau data, veterans own 2.4 million businesses, or 9% of all businesses nationwide.  They generate $1.2 trillion in receipts and employ nearly 5.8 million people.

At CrossCheck, we only hope that our guarantee is as stout as our military personnel’s commitment to ensuring the freedom of others.

Thank You Armed Forces!
