3 Guarantees on Super Bowl Sunday

Posted by Brandon Weaver | Thu, Jan 30, 2014 @ 12:18 PM

Super Bowl HelmetThis weekend, the biggest sporting event of the year tackles your TV screen and it is the first time the Super Bowl has been played in the New York metropolitan area. Likewise, the game is being heavily scrutinized for being played in a cold location with chances of freezing temperatures. But it’s not the first cold weather Super Bowl; see the 1967 NFL Championship known as “The Ice Bowl.” In recent memory, the big game is usually played in warm weather climates like Miami, Tampa, Phoenix, San Diego, or in domes in New Orleans, Indianapolis, or Detroit.

Aside from Joe Namath’s infamous victory guarantee, not many modern day players want to be as bold to guarantee victory because of the media ridicule that could follow. But with each Super Bowl played, rest assured there are a few guaranteed things to look out for during Super Bowl Sunday.

Pricey, Pricey Commercials

Super Bowl CommercialMany viewers consider Super Bowl commercials the second main attraction to the game. Casual football fans may even say commercials are their main interest. The Super Bowl television broadcasting rights rotate between the four main networks: FOX, NBC, CBS, and ABC with FOX televising this year’s game. The asking price by each network for a 30-second commercial spot continues to increase every year. This year, a 30-second spot will cost advertisers just over $4 million! And of course the regular industries will be prominently represented: beer, soft drinks, automobiles, and website domain hosting. Some teasers for upcoming films being released in the spring or summer will also make appearances. To watch last year’s ads in the order in which they appeared, check them out at Business Insider. If you don’t get your fix with the commercials themselves, you can even vote for your favorite and least favorite ad after the game on sites such as Ad Blitz.

Prop Betting

Super Bowl Coin TossProp betting has become increasingly popular. If you’re not familiar, prop bets are bets on the occurrence or non-occurrence during a game that does not directly affect the final score of the game. Some prop bets this year include the coin toss, how many times Peyton Manning will yell “Omaha” during the course of the game, how long the national anthem will be, and what color the Gatorade shower will be for the winning coach. CNBC has compiled a list of the 15 most bizarre Super Bowl bets. Needless to say, casinos in Nevada and Atlantic City will be busy this weekend.

Disney World

Within minutes of the game’s conclusion and the confetti raining down on the field, you are sure to see a sideline reporter ask the MVP or other star player, “You just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do next?” At which point the player dutifully responds, “I’m going to Disney World!” True to his word, later in the week you will undoubtedly see that same player being paraded down Main Street in Disney World, waving to fans alongside Mickey and Goofy. This Super Bowl tradition has been constant for 26 years and as International Business Times writes, may be “the most notable travel advertising slogan in history.”

Some things about the Super Bowl are very difficult to guarantee. In fact, who could have guaranteed there would be a power outage at last year’s game? But if we can find three things you’re guaranteed to get this Super Bowl Sunday, we’re sure to find guarantees elsewhere, too.
