Controllers: Give It Away Now

Posted by Heather Brautman | Fri, Dec 27, 2013 @ 06:44 AM

ControllerCheckGiftsIt’s that time of the year – no, not the most wonderful – but when you’re scrambling to wrap up year-end while being bombarded by every organization your company may have ever donated to. You’re not averse to being charitable, but you want to do it on your own terms. There’s no need to go Grinch – we’ve rounded up some suggestions for ways to give that give yourself and staff that old holiday spirit.

Let There Be Blood

If the AmCheckOutGivingBlooderican Red Cross had its way, it wouldn’t be a White Christmas at all. It’d be a bloody red one, where revelers included a trip to the blood bank on their caroling routes. Donating blood is a way that every one of your employees can contribute to a great cause, without paying a penny. Depending on how many employees you encourage to donate blood (or, where eligible, platelets), a Bloodmobile may even come to your business location, making giving even easier. Navigate the Red Cross’ website to find the closest donation locations and even suggestions on getting the highest participation turnout.

Good Things, Very Small Packages

CheckOutSmallGiftsEver hear an employee say that he’d like to give, but he’s only got a couple of dollars, and that won’t help anyone in this economy? A trend on the small scale is sweeping the country in a very big way. It’s called microloans, also known as microlending. A reputable source, such as Kiva, ensures that no contribution is too small. The organization facilitates a loan toward a needy borrower. Kiva and its ilk vet every applicant, and donors can choose whether to actually “lend” money (receiving it back with interest) or gift it, with no strings attached. With a low minimum of $25, your employees can really give a gift that keeps on giving.

Super Sponsors

Similar toVerifiedWaystoGive the idea of microlending, but on a local level, is sponsoring. Do something good for your business while also fostering community relations by sponsoring something. Got a local Little League that’s outgrown its uniforms? Close to a women’s shelter in need of a pantry refill? Look around to your neighbors and see where you can do some good. When employees’ charitable gifts go to sponsoring, they feel invested in the organization, since they can see the result of their donation in real time.

You’ve Got a Gift

Has anyone evVerifyGoodGiftser told you you’re really good at something? Baking casseroles, performing quick oil changes, doing complicated personal taxes? Well, guess what – you’ve got a gift, so use it! And get your coworkers to do the same. It’s called the barter system, and again, it doesn’t cost you anything extra. Brainstorm something or somethings you can offer in trade. A home cooked dinner, a night of babysitting, chauffer to the local outlet mall. Then let the trades begin. It’s up to you how many you offer (the more of your gifts you can give, the more you can get!). This is a great way to get to know your coworkers, as well as save money on services you just don’t have time for this time of year.

And now, for your excitement and interest in giving, we have a gift for you! It's our free payment glossary, which breaks down some of the techie-est terms in the industry. Download it here, no unwrapping necessary. And happy new year!
