You Better Work: Fun with Processing Checks on Labor Day

Posted by Heather Brautman | Fri, Aug 30, 2013 @ 10:00 AM

Whether you just got scheduled as a last-minute fill-in for a Labor Day shift or you knew it all along, there’s one thing that’s clear – laboring on Labor Day is just not as fun as having a three-day weekend. We get it. So we’ve gathered up a few ideas that we hope help get you through. Of course, you can implement these ideas any day, no holidays required. So get to work!

Get Jiggly With It

JelloStaplerWhen you’re feeling like Milton or just entirely too fed up dealing with those TPS reports, it’s time to break out the big guns. That’s right, say H-E-L-L-O to Jell-O. The stapler-in-Jell-O is a cult classic, but that doesn’t mean you have to rely on old standards. Getting creative could be just what you need to break out of the mold (get it?). When your coworker is on his next break, scout his desk for his favorite pen, clips, scissors, or note pad. Try to avoid his electronics or encase them in something protective like double plastic bags, because the jiggly stuff has a tendency to seep into stuff.

Go Mellow Yellow

StickyNoteLet it all out, as much as you can stash on a square, that is. Sticky notes have had a long reputation of being the perfect forum to speak one’s mind – after all, Carrie Bradshaw was broken up with via a post-it note, and the little yellow fellows are even the subject of The Post-It Note Project. Brainstorm ways that you can communicate via sticky notes, such as leaving secret encouragements on your coworker’s computer screens. “You’re awesome!” or “Great job today” fits perfectly on a sticky, as does a short riddle or joke. Feeling artistic? You don’t need much more than a pen and a sticky note to draw a little something that makes someone’s day.

Score One for the Home Team

Fitness instructors, chiropractors, and weight loss coaches can band together about one thing – sitting all day isn’t good for you! When you’re tied to a chair, it may seem like you’ve got no way to get much exercise. Think again! Put some flair in your chair and create your own sport, like the computer-bound champions of Office Chair Basketball. Cubicle aisles aren’t meant only for walking! Race your cubicle neighbors, set up a hoop, golf with cubicle handicaps, create a wheels-only obstacle course. Just a few minutes of activity away from the screen can refresh you for the rest of the day ahead.

Fun in a Flash

WorkerDancingWant a way to get close to your coworkers, even those you don’t see every day? Merge manufacturing with marketing and engineering with economics, all through some fancy dancing. It’s called a flash mob, and chances are you’ve seen a company doing one to Gangnam Style or the Harlem Shake. Recruit folks from all areas of your company for your own flash mob – you can even get logo track suits for some real flair – and pick a song. All that’s left is to choreograph and wait. Have rehearsals outside (the fresh air and exercise are bonus fun) and you’ll find that this is the kind of labor you can really love. That's right - you know what to do, so you bust a move.
