Both the television show “The Sopranos” and Tony Soprano have taken their bows (RIP, James Gandolfini), but organized crime is doing anything but going quietly. If you’re a retailer, the following facts may feel like you’re getting your legs broken. But trust us, you need to know this information if you want to save your store from the $35 million stolen every single day across our country.

It’s a police-it-yourself state. Yes, the authorities will come if you request help with a shoplifter. But shoplifters are only caught once every 48 times. Can you afford to lose 47 trips’ worth of stock?

Shoplifters are getting creative. Sure, you know to look out for some of the more suspect signs – bulky sweatshirts, large bags, people who seem nervous. But shoplifters are getting more and more creative with their craft. Ever hear of a flash mob? (No, Tony Soprano never participated in this kind.) Flash mobs are no longer just a fun diversion where teenagers break into “Thriller” in the middle of a mall. Now they execute a flash mob to distract you and make off with your products. Not so thrilling.

It can kill. Shoplifting isn’t just scary for your bottom line. Your life is on the line, too. According to the National Retail Federation, 15% of shoplifting apprehensions lead to violence. This doesn’t mean you should just let it happen, but there are safeguards you should know about to protect yourself and your inventory.

It’s happening right now. The average “habitual” shoplifter steals 1.6 times per week. That’s each shoplifter. Look around. Do you see 11 people? According to The National Association for Shoplifting Prevention, one of them may be a shoplifter, or 27 million people across the country. Stealing from stores 1.6 times a week.

As a retailer, you’re already fighting. You win half the battle just to get customers into your store. Making sure they make it out your doors with items they’ve paid for is the other half, and it is a battle. To become battle ready:
