If the idea of unplugging on vacation seems so 2012, take heart. With all the connectivity available via tablets, smartphones, and laptops, you never have to be too far from the latest updates on your favorite blogs. Although we encourage you to enjoy your vacation, see the sights, get out and explore, and try new things, we also understand the importance of swiping and scrolling through some familiar territory. Check out the following blog suggestions for reading material – and enjoy the trip!

* We’d be happy to curate a blog list for you – feel free to leave notes in the comments section below. We have taken steps to ensure all of these blogs are free (no subscription or registration required), they’re updated fairly often, and they represent a wide variety of reading material.

When You Miss Your Furry Friends

catlaptopIt’s the one drawback of going on vacation – having to sneak out of the house as you close the door behind your furry-faced family members who are staying behind. Whether you distract the cat with her favorite treat or drop off the dogs at sleep away camp, there’s still the sad moment where you wake up in your hotel room and realize there’s no four-legged creatures on the bed (caveat: we’re making some assumptions here about the way you travel). Get your fur fix by tuning into an animal blog such as Cute Overload. If you’re feeling stressed in a new place, a couple of posts on fuzzy baby chicks, cats licking dogs, or playful pandas will have you sorted in no time. The only drawback is that you’ll possibly annoy your hotel/cabin/seat neighbors with constant shouts of “OMG! That’s SO CUTE!”

When You Want the Latest Celebrity News

Just because you’re hitting the road doesn’t mean you can’t keep up with the Kardashians. Going on vacation is no time to lose track of who’s dating who, who’s in trouble with the law, who’s heading to rehab, and who’s at the top of the charts (for that moment). If nothing else, it’ll give you something to talk about over the breakfast buffet or by the pool. There’s really just one place to go, and that’s Perez Hilton’s outpost on the web. His blog gives you minute by minute details of the sordid and the sort-of famous, as well as some of the more universally applicable breaking news as well. You just won’t find white squiggle tagging like his anywhere else in the blogosphere.

When You’re Craving Media Strategy

Did we lose you there? It’s vacation, it’s not supposed to be about work. But that’s where it gets fun. Our friends at HubSpot make reporting on the media and marketing worlds fun – even if you’re not highly involved in either. Their blog offers excitement such as staff members dancing to “Thriller” and “Gangnam Style,” snarky laughter over bad stock image photos, and of course, marketing know-how but on a readable level. Check them out when you’re traveling and you’ll have something cool to say at that dinner table full of strangers.

When You're Feeling Sporty

laptopsportsMissing your Wednesday night rec league? Out of the country just at the critical point in game 5? Feel like there’s no one to share your obsession with curling, ping pong, lacrosse, tennis, or more? Well, the blogosphere’s going to help you score. If you can’t unwind on the clay court or watch it on TV, reading blogs about your favorite team can come close. It may even help you bond. Stay up to date with sites such as The Bleacher Report, where you can customize the posts based on your favorite team. Yes, there's even an app. Just say something like “How ‘bout them Yankees?” under your breath in the Jacuzzi and see who turns up as a fan, even a continent away.

Of course, you’ve already made one great choice to read the CrossCheck blog, so be sure to bookmark us and bring us with you (we love to travel)! We’d also like to suggest our “sister” blog, over at Optio Solutions. Perfect for reading on the hotel balcony or Lido deck! What blogs do you recommend? Please add to our list below!
