If your dentist is in a noticeably cheerier mood this fall, it could be because he/she just attended a five-day conference held by the American Dental Association (ADA) in Honolulu, HI. This year’s conference, ADA 2018, takes place October 18 – 22 and features a wide variety of educational sessions as well as notable speakers, a tradeshow and networking events.
The American Dental Association exists to power the profession of dentistry and to assist members in advancing the overall oral health of their patients. Current membership stands near 161,000.
There are several unique educational opportunities at ADA 2018. A variety of continuing education courses are available for attendees, along with a special track for new dentists and notable motivational and educational speakers.
The American Dental Association meeting offers a variety of educational experiences to advance clinical skills and award CE credits.
Class types include:
- Advanced Hands-On
- Clinical Education
- CE in the Exhibit Hall
- Campfire Sessions
- Special Interest Tracks
Campfire sessions are one-hour small informal group discussions that award 1.0 CE credits an hour and feature three different formats:
- Continue the Conversation — Ask expert speakers and thought leaders questions after the session in a smaller group format.
- Peer-to-Peer Knowledge Exchanges — Meet in an informal learning environment to discuss defined topics and exchange ideas.
- Ask the Experts — Engage with experts on a variety of dentistry topics to discuss case examples, theories and relevant questions.
New Dentist Conference Track
The New Dentist Conference track is designed to welcome newly graduated dentists to the industry and provide them with useful tools as they move forward in their careers.
This track takes place October 18 – 20 and provides up-and-coming dentists with the opportunity to participate in a smaller community within the larger American Dental Association meeting.
Included in this program are Customized CE tracks, dentist-specific keynotes delivered by popular Ted Talk speakers, networking events and lunches, and free access to all exclusive ADA 2018 keynotes. Programming ends at 3pm each day to give participants a chance to explore the island.
Special events include Morning Yoga at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and the New Dentist Reception at The Modern Honolulu.
The American Dental Association conference includes several notable speakers who will share their experience and insights with attendees.
Kindra Hall is an award-winning columnist, published author and consultant. Following the theme of her presentation, “Strategic Storytelling to Grow Your Practice,” she will teach attendees how to implement marketing techniques into the development of patient relationships that can be leveraged into practice growth and brand development.
Charles Adler is an entrepreneur and the co-founder of Kickstarter whose area of focus includes “following your passion” and teaching audiences how to trust in themselves and use their ideas to pursue their next big adventure.
Sekou Andrews is a schoolteacher turned speaker and artist who blends inspirational speaking with spoken word poetry. His keynote address, “Disrupting Dentistry,” advocates challenging convention to make controversial changes. Andrews will share insights he gained from barrier-breaking companies and individuals.
The conference’s Exhibit Hall takes place October 18 – 20, 7 AM to 3 PM and provides dentists the chance to discover and ask questions about the latest industry products for their offices. Thousands of products and services will be on display and special show discounts are available to purchase items.
A retreat room is provided with comfortable massage chair seating. Also included in the exhibit hall are free-to-attend Continuing Education (CE) courses.
This year’s ADA meeting provides many opportunities to network with fellow dentists while participating in engaging group activities and events. For example, the morning of the first day offers:
- Morning Yoga

There are also several larger events such as Some Enchanted Evening: A Welcome Celebration.
Some Enchanted Evening: A Welcome Celebration
A musical celebration is set to welcome arriving guests at Waikiki Shell on the first night of the conference.
