AAA Survey Says Americans Are Wary of Auto Repair Shops

Posted by Joe Gargiulo | Fri, Dec 30, 2016 @ 09:36 AM

Sixty-three percent of US motorists don’t trust auto repair shops in general, but almost the same percentage have found one that they trust says AAA. The organization released its findings December 1, 2016 after analyzing the results of a recent survey that did not distinguish between “mechanical service and repair” and “collision repair.”

AAA (American Automobile Association) urges all motorists to identify reputable facilities in advance of car trouble, and has established a protocol for businesses to become AAA Approved Auto Repair shops.

  • Negative past experiences (63%)
  • Concerns that the work will not be done correctly (49%)

Age Affects Driver Trust

  • 20% of Baby Boomers reported they “totally trust” the auto repair industry compared to 10% for younger generations.
  • 76% of Baby Boomers are more likely to have chosen auto repair shops that they trust compared to Millennials (55%) and Gen-Xers (56%).

Approved Auto Repair Shops

AAA is a not-for-profit federation of affiliated motor clubs with more than 1,100 offices in the US and Canada. Its Approved Auto Repair program identifies, investigates and certifies high-quality auto repair facilities that employ trained technicians who are properly equipped to service modern vehicles. These approved shops follow professional business practices that support their long term viability, and they must maintain customer satisfaction ratings of 90% or better.

Whether or not a business is an Approved Auto Repair should never affect a commitment to providing quality service at a fair price, and shops should be aware that certification costs a minimum of $1,000 per year for administrative fees.

CrossCheck has devised a successful payment service that allows shops to conduct repairs and receive guaranteed payments, even if it takes motorists 30 days to pay off their charges.

With the help of the Multiple Check program (aka "hold check"), motorists write 2 – 4 checks to cover the repairs. Shops deposit those checks over a 30-day window according to a mutually convenient schedule. The checks are guaranteed by CrossCheck up to amounts stated in the service agreements, and motorists drive away knowing they can afford the repairs without a credit check. It’s simple and fast, and has helped thousands of garages and motorists over the last three decades.
